I remember the days of dressing up in a super special costume to tour our neighborhood filling up my Jack-o'-lantern pail with candy.  Some of our neighbors handed out terrible treats.  It is important to check the Halloween loot before any is eaten.  Here are a few other safety tips to keep Halloween fun and accident-free!

1) Watch out for cars!  Lead by example and teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

2) Children under the age of 13 should not be alone at night without adult supervision.  If kids are mature enough to be without supervision, they should stick to familiar, well-lit areas and trick-or-treat in a group.

3) Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional.  While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as "one size fits all" or "no need to see an eye specialist'" obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is dangerous.  This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders.

4) Choose face paint & makeup instead of masks, which can obstruct a child's vision.

5) When selecting a costume, make sure it's the right size to prevent slips and falls.

6) Give the children flashlights and glow sticks to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Thanks for reading our safety tips.  Happy Halloween!
