All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Bicyclist and Motorist

The season of biking in Minnesota has started. Minneapolis is one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the United States. As of 2014, Minneapolis has 118 miles of on-street bike paths, and an additional 92 miles of off-street bike paths. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minneapolis is the forth-highest bike-commuting city. Biking is a great way to get around town, but here are a few tips for bikers or motorist on sharing the road.

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Wear highly visible clothing, such as bright colors preferably with reflective material.
  • Bicyclist must ride on the right of traffic; obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Bicyclists have all rights and duties of any other vehicle driver.
  • Bicyclist must have legal lights and reflectors on after dusk.
  • Motorist must leave at least 3 feet of clearance between their vehicle and the bicyclist, when passing.
  • No riding on sidewalks within business districts unless permitted.
  • No bicyclist should hitch a ride on another vehicle.
  • All bicyclist and motorist must yield to pedestrians on sidewalks, crosswalks and intersections.
  • Obey the rules of the road. Bikers must stop at all stop signs, traffic lights, and use turning signals.

The best way to prevent any accident or an insurance claim while driving is to slow down and stay alert. Look both ways at intersections or at driveways.  Road conditions are always changing so staying alert is crucial for safety. Be safe and kind to one another while on the roadways.
